Building a Race Mower

The first step you must take is to decide in which class you want to run.

USLMRA has 6 classes from which to choose.

Stock, IMOW, AP, SP, BP, or FX

You can obtain the rules for each class from their website

letsmow.com

Select a mower as light but as strong as you can

Brand name is not important

To be competitive in any class other than STOCK you will need to change the ratio of the engine RPM

in relation to the transmission RPM

This can be as simple as a large pulley on the engine (6-8") and a smaller pulley on the transmission

(2-4") With the exeption of IMOW which uses the same pulley input and output

Now that you have reached of speed somewhere in the 30-50 MPH

range it's time to take a good look at your steering system. Replace all worn parts with new

quality party. This can be the weak link in your system.

Make sure your brake system is as good as it can be. We do need to stop at some point. Keep the deck

You may remove all spindles and belts and of course the blades to get the deck as light as possible.

Refer to the Rule book as to height and palcement. New tires will help your overall handling ability.

Form a club among your fellow racers and run in someone's back yard until you find or build a track

Try to get as much exposure at fairs and car shows to let the public know there is such a thing as Lawnmower Racing

Let them participate as well as watch and have a blast!!

You may eventually end up with something like this
